Nevada (cont)
With the pandemic decimating the economies of both Las Vegas and Reno (Nevada relies largely on revenue generated by these tourist hotspots), Republicans hope to capitalize on that economic malaise with Laxalt. The 44 year old may come from a political dynasty as he is the son of former U.S. Senator Pete Domenici of New Mexico and grandson of former Nevada governor and U.S. senator Paul Laxalt.
However, despite his family’s political roots and an unsuccessfully run for governor of Nevada in 2018, Laxalt comes with some extra baggage. Laxalt was co-chairman of Donald Trump’s 2020 unsuccessful re-election campaign in Nevada and has the full endorsement of the former president and, as such, backs the ex-president’s unfounded claims that the 2020 election was stolen.
