In the blue corner looking to defend the Democratic-held seat is someone who is more your ‘all American’ type. Mark Kelly is a retired astronaut, U.S. Navy captain, and businessman who secured the vacant seat left by the late great Senator John McCain. He is also the husband of Congresswoman Gabby Giffords, who was shot in the head in a near-fatal 2011 incident, so unsurprisingly, his campaign is focused on gun control activism.
He has been accused by his opponent of welcoming open borders, a sensitive topic for many border states, but Senator Kelly was quick to rebuke this accusation stating that he favored strong border security but opposed the construction of the Trump wall. Kelly has out fundraised Blake and is currently in the lead, but Republicans are trying to rectify that by injecting more cash into Blake’s campaign.
