4. Kenneth Griffin

Republican

Total donations: $68.6M

Entrepreneur, investor, chief executive officer, co-chief investment officer, founder, and 80% owner of the multinational hedge fund Citadel LLC, Griffin once famously said in a 2012 interview with the Chicago Tribune that the rich actually have too little influence in politics. You wouldn’t think that as the self described Ronald Reagan Republican has used much of his $31 billion fortune backing around 29 Republican candidates over the last decade or so.

As the top individual donor, Griffin $18.5 million to the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy controlled super PAC the Congressional Leadership Fund, a group that backs dozens of House GOP challengers. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell would also see his super PAC, the Senate Leadership Fund, receive a check for $10 million.

  1. Do I see a trend here? Make it look like the republicans have more money? If that’s true, how do the democRATs out spend the republicans 5 to 1?
