5. Timothy Mellon
Republican
Total donations: $40M
As the grandson of Andrew W. Mellon and an heir to the Mellon banking fortune, Timothy Mellon once put his fortune to good use by donating over $1 million to The International Group for Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) as part of its efforts to locate Amelia Earhart’s plane and remains.
His efforts might have been unsuccessful in finding the famous aviator but his money has helped a lot of Republican candidates over the years and he gained a certain notoriety last year by being a huge supporter of Trump and his border wall, donating $53 million to Texas’s border wall fund.
As with Kenneth Griffin, Mellon is also a financial backer of the House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy controlled super PAC the Congressional Leadership Fund, as he donated $10 million on top of the $18.5 million handed over by Griffin. As with Jeff Yass, Mellon also put his money behind Blake Masters by donating $5 million to the Sentinel Action Fund, a super PAC aligned with the Heritage Foundation’s action fund, which spent the money on ads attacking the eventual winner in Arizona, Sen. Mark Kelly.

Do I see a trend here? Make it look like the republicans have more money? If that’s true, how do the democRATs out spend the republicans 5 to 1?
