8. Stephen Schwarzman

Republican

Total donations: $35.5M

Schwarzman began his journey to becoming a billionaire (his fortune currently stands at 25.6 billion) when he founded his global private equity firm The Blackstone Group, of which he is the current CEO, with former United States Secretary of Commerce Peter G. Peterson back in 1985. Together, the two men would grow the company into the world’s largest private equity firm.

As a top 10 donor in each of the last three elections, the New York City billionaire, who briefly served as the chairman of President Donald Trump’s Strategic and Policy Forum, provided a huge and much needed boost to Republicans’ bid to retake control of Congress by giving $10 million to both the Senate Leadership Fund and the Congressional Leadership Fund. Despite the projected ‘red wave’ not materializing, Schwarzman’s money did help the Republicans to retake the House of Representatives, if only by a small majority.

  1. Do I see a trend here? Make it look like the republicans have more money? If that’s true, how do the democRATs out spend the republicans 5 to 1?
