It has long been understood that Putin’s saber-rattling and aggressive moves were borne out of his belief that the collapse of the Soviet Empire “was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century” and had fostered separatist movements inside Russia. And that might be true to a certain extent as having a large country politically and economically stable benefits all, both its citizens and the wider world. Its collapse serves no one.

However, Putin seems to have miscalculated as he believed the previous Soviet states would welcome him with open arms. Instead, he was met with clenched fists. Like Napoleon and Hitler before him, Putin’s decisions are proving to be one of history’s enormous strategic blunders. So calamitous is Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, that certain factions of Russian society are not only turning against him but in non-Russian fashion, doing it publicly.
