The upper echelons of Russian political society may still back Putin’s agenda publicly, but a few cracks are starting to show as with the chairman of the national oil company Lukoil, Ravil Maganov, releasing a statement calling for the war in Ukraine to swiftly end. The only thing that ended was Maganov’s life as after he was admitted to the Moscow Central Clinical Hospital for a suspected heart attack, he swiftly ‘fell’ from a sixth-floor window.

Where does this all leave the world? Panicking about an imminent nuclear strike? A sudden turnaround for the embattled Russian military in Ukraine? Or, and you don’t have to be a military strategist to work this one out, Putin has far extended his influence and it will not be Ukrainian or NATO forces that bring him to heel, but the very people that heel has been firmly pressed on for the last 22 year.
