Safeguarding 5G networks from Chinese control

The well-known Trumpist strategy on trade policy lacked a lot of rhyme and reason. He was the one to provoke futile, consumer-harming conflicts with partners such as Canada and Germany.

However, Trump’s campaign to build 5G networks on Western, rather than to go with Chinese technology was fully powered by abundant reason: to secure all communications in democratic countries from Chinese surveillance and even Chinese sabotage.

It is probably the single example of a decision he took that wasn’t nationalistic, as the main alternative suppliers to China’s Huawei are Sweden’s Ericsson and Finland’s Nokia. In 2018, Australia fully banned Huawei from its 5G networks.

Also, in June 2020, Canada and Singapore declared that they would rely on non-Chinese technology. The U.K. rapidly followed in July and even wanted all Huawei components removed from where they have been installed already.

  1. You didn’t mention the over a million deaths from Covid following his longstanding ignorance and attempted deception. Nor did you comment on his flagrant attempt to destroy our democracy by inciting a coup. His criminal use of the office, his racism, his authoritarian and self-serving policies, will impact for generations.
