6 Political Myths People Still Believe

Democracy was not perfect before the United States revived it

One can trace this myth to Robert H. Weibe, who said, the most significant contribution of America to world history is democracy. Following the former president of the USA, Donald Trump’s assertion that “America, at its founding, is home to an incredible people with a revolutionary idea: that they could rule themselves.

That they could chart their destiny, and that, together, they could light up the world,” the myth lingers on. However, this is not true because, until recent times, America’s democratic ideology only surfaced, i.e., the right to vote for Americans of any “race, color, or previous condition of servitude” was only recognized from the 15th Amendment ratification.

Other examples of how America did not perfect democracy are the electoral college vote, indirect voting of senators by legislative members, and an equal number of senators for each state. All these policies are anti-democratic. The electoral college produced President Donald Trump despite losing the popular vote in 2016.

Also, 17th Amendments ratification brought about people electing the two senators of each state in 1913. Also, women couldn’t vote until the 19th Amendment’s ratification. Therefore, to think America perfected democracy is untrue.

  1. Another un-educated ,left leaning
    tool of anti-American bias.
Do some REAL research and find the reason why the Founders created the electoral college.
It was to insure that under represented states got an EQUAL vote; the people who feed this country, the farmers and ranchers who don’t live in the festering cities
    that breed corruption.
I guarantee the person who wrote this article is neither.

Our founding fathers thought of Democracy as the worst form of government, largely because they read the classics, often in their original Greek or Latin. That is why they created a Republic, and why we avoided the Reign of Terror that they had in “democratic” revolutionary France.

  3. The United States has never been a democracy. A pure democracy cannot function on a large population and has no protection for individual rights. It is an ancient idea. The United States idea is limited government where rights are natural and begin with the individual.
