6 Political Myths People Still Believe

Politics and democracy guarantee liberty

There are assertions that democracy guarantees liberty, but this is not true in all its ramifications. Some people widely believe that democracy protects the interests of the minorities and checks the excess of authoritarians. This belief is also a result of the definition of democracy that it is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people.

Also, the U.N. believes that democracy “provides an environment for the protection and effective realization of human rights.” This means that people still believe that democracy guarantees freedom of association, speech, and press.

However, those democratically elected still formulate illiberal policies. For instance, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has made attempts to stifle critics. One such effort is threatening Senator Antonio Trillanes IV with arrest after more than ten years of allegations that he planned a coup attempt.

The senator remains in the custody of the Senate President until his lawyers could petition against these accusations.

Another example of how democracy doesn’t guarantee liberty is the Hungarian parliament revising a law to shutter Central Hungarian University. Its founder and the school curriculum are political foils of the authoritarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orban.

  1. Another un-educated ,left leaning
    tool of anti-American bias.
Do some REAL research and find the reason why the Founders created the electoral college.
It was to insure that under represented states got an EQUAL vote; the people who feed this country, the farmers and ranchers who don’t live in the festering cities
    that breed corruption.
I guarantee the person who wrote this article is neither.

Our founding fathers thought of Democracy as the worst form of government, largely because they read the classics, often in their original Greek or Latin. That is why they created a Republic, and why we avoided the Reign of Terror that they had in “democratic” revolutionary France.

  3. The United States has never been a democracy. A pure democracy cannot function on a large population and has no protection for individual rights. It is an ancient idea. The United States idea is limited government where rights are natural and begin with the individual.
