The darkness of addiction

Hunter started drinking ever since he was a teenager and even confessed to abusing co*aine when he was in college. Over the years, he has been many times in and out of rehab because of that. Back in 2013, he signed up for the US Navy Reserves and decided to take the oath of office before his father, who was then the vice-president, in a White House ceremony.

However, on his very first day at the naval base, he was tested positive for co*aine use and immediately discharged, a memory that he is deeply embarrassed about. As stated in the New Yorker, he drank too much after the death of his older brother, Beau, who died from brain cancer in 2015. In fact, right after his brother’s death, the only time Hunter left the house was to buy more vodka.

As his daughter, Naomi once said on Twitter, “He and Beau were one. One heart, one soul, one mind.” During a difficult divorce filing in 2017, Hunter’s ex-wife accused him of spending too much time on his own interests (which were mainly consisting of all the elements of a vicious life you could possibly think of), leaving the family with no possibility to pay legitimate bills.

This year, Ms. Buhle took to national television to recall her story of being married to Hunter, describing how much he struggled with his massive drug addiction, and how heart-breaking and painful it was to be married to such a person.

Even more, in his memory, Hunter confessed that his many infidelities were the final straw in their marriage. A DNA test in 2019 discovered that he was “the biological and legal father” of a child that was born to an exotic dancer, Lunden Alexis Roberts. Hunter insisted that he had “no recollection” of their encounter. However, he did settle a paternity suit with Ms. Roberts, and he’s now paying for child support.

Before his definitive split from Ms. Buhle, Hunter got mixed with his brother’s widow, Hallie Biden, for two years. Apparently, they bonded over the shared grief of their loss, as he mentioned to New Yorker.

A couple of weeks later, Hunter got married to the South African filmmaker Melissa Cohen, after a six-day romance. They even have one son. Hunter talked many times about what it’s like to struggle with addiction, saying that you never get rid of it, but the more you learn how to live with it.

However, the reason why he thinks to survive through everything is because of his family’s love, recounting how once his father held him in an embrace, desperately saying: “I don’t know what else I can do. I’m so scared. Tell me what to do.”

The New York Times reported that Hunter decided to turn to paint as a form of therapy, quoting him as saying that it managed to keep him away from people and places where he shouldn’t be.
