A childhood forged by a lot of tragedy
Hunter was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1970 to President Biden and his first wife Neilia Biden. Unfortunately, Hunter was only two years old in December 1972, when a truck rammed into the family car, taking the lives of his mother and his sister Naomi.
The accident left Hunter with a fractured skull and his older brother with a broken leg. Joe Biden wasn’t in the car at the moment of the car crash, and he had to take his oath of office from the hospital room. Later on, Hunter attended Georgetown University and Yale Law School, and he graduated in 1996.
Between his two degrees, he joined the Jesuit Volunteer Corps, a Catholic group that is known to volunteer to serve marginalized communities. At Volunteer Corps, he met his first wife, Kathleen Buhle, and they got married in 1993. Hunter has three children with Kathleen: Naomi, Finnegan, and Maisy. However, they eventually split in 2017.
