10. George Washington

This may come as a surprise to many of our readers, but even the Founding Father of the United States has been found to be involved in such controversies. Although he was engaged to be married to Martha Dandridge Custis then, a letter dated 1758 surfaced, which was written by Washington to Sally Fairfax. Sarah (Sally) Fairfax was the wife of George Washington’s close friend George William Fairfax.

Sally Fairfax was a married woman and the letter contained back and forth flirtatious exchanges and sexual innuendos that were quite uncommon and scandalous at that time. However, George Washington later married Martha Curtis, who remained his loyal wife and friend for forty years.
