1. Immigration

For a country whose entire existence is based on immigration, America’s aversion to immigrants in the 21st century seems a little odd. Donald Trump, who is from German/Scottish stock, fanned these flames with his anti-immigration rhetoric and chants of ‘build the wall’ all the way back at the start of his run for the presidency.

Once he achieved power, his immigration policies tried to put his words into action. One in particular was the 2019 policy known as “Remain in Mexico.” Under this program, the Department of Homeland Security can send certain-non Mexican citizens who entered the United States back to Mexico, instead of allowing them to remain in the US while their application is being processed.

Not all immigrants are sneaking illegally over the southern border as many of them have credible claims for asylum. As such, this policy has long been considered inhumane. And while the lower courts have so far blocked any efforts from the Biden administration from ending this policy, the decision of whether the Biden administration can terminate a Trump-era border policy now sits with the Supreme Court.
