3. Pill Mills
A scourge that has been sweeping the United States over the last few decades is the nationwide opioid crisis and now the Supreme Court has to make a decision about the so-called “Pill Mill” case. This case has come to light due to the lawyers for two doctors appealing their convictions and lengthy sentences for prescribing dangerous drugs in the absence of medical justification.
The lawyers argue that the jury should have been able to consider that the convicted doctors reasonably believed that they were acting within professional boundaries. This case comes at a time when more than one member of the Supreme Court has expressed their concerns about the role federal criminal law plays in convicting innocent medical professionals.
