Do these sanctions precipitate a severe economic contraction in Russia, forcing Putin to realize he won’t achieve any victory?

Everyone says that the recent sanctions imposed on Russia are completely unprecedented, which is completely false. The way in which the U.S. and the European Union sanctioned and cut financial ties with Russia only resembles the sanctions that Britain and its allies imposed on Germany when World War I started.

But it’s worth remembering that those measures didn’t stop Germany in any way, because just like Russia nowadays, it was self-sufficient. But even though self-sufficiency is on the table for Russia, it does come with the price of austerity, whether it was planned all along or just a consequence of war.
