Topeka, Kansas
Kansas Governor Laura Kelly, who’s a Democrat and strong abortion-rights supporter in a Republican-dominated state, vowed on Tuesday to keep opposing all regressive legislation that might interfere with individual rights or freedoms.
Kansas voters have to decide in August if added language is needed to the state constitution that has been sought by abortion opponents, which says that nothing in the charter will grant a right to an abortion.
The initiative ballot is designed to overturn a 2019 Kansas Supreme Court decision that declares access to an abortion to be a “fundamental” right.
However, if Roe v. Wade gets overturned, the change will allow the Republican-controlled Legislature to ban abortion.
