Santa Fe, New Mexico
New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed last year a law that overturned the state’s dormant ban on most abortion procedures.
She took to Twitter on Tuesday and vowed to safeguard local access to abortion services. Grisham, who’s a Democrat who signed the law, anticipating the new approach from the U.S. Supreme Court, mentioned that “the moment I feared so much is upon us.”
New Mexico voters ousted back in 2020 plenty of socially conservative Democratic legislators who were extremely supportive of the state’s 1969 ban.
New Mexico already gets so many patients from neighboring states, like Texas, that have rougher restrictions on abortion procedures. Albuquerque has only a few independent clinics that actually perform abortions in the third semester.
