For the moment, the former president hasn’t been charged with any crimes. However, a special counsel has been recently appointed at the Justice Department, specifically to oversee not one, but two Trump-related investigations that cover the hoarding of various documents at Mar-a-Lago, but also January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol.

Trump nervously railed against the entire House committee while investigating the January 6 insurrection, and some of his most ardent supporters even tried to stonewall it.

Even so, it’s not easy to dismiss no less than 800 pages of a detailed report, which contains his relentless efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and his involvement in triggering the rioters that attacked the Capitol. Even if the committee’s criminal referrals of Trump are mostly symbolic, the former president will have to wait and see what comes of the DOJ’s own twin probes.

String of setbacks

The ongoing revelations that we received at the end of last year continuously chipped away at Trump’s well-built facade of power, which includes some of the biggest developments, such as the January 6 committee report, and other smaller details. In fact, all the hidden court documents show the harsh (but relieving) truth that even some of his loudest acolytes on Fox News knew very well that his 2020 election fantasy was entirely false.

Sean Hannity, the Fox News opinion host, even admitted that he never believed for “one second” all the fraud claims that were made. So even the fact that some of the closest conservative elites in Trump’s own circle knew all along what was the truth adds a lot of context to the fears of fraud they tried to push so badly, encouraging Republican lawmakers to pass as soon as possible new election security laws in a couple of relevant states.
