Winning a full four-year term to the office she assumed last year after Gov. Andrew Cuomo resigned in disgrace, Hochul who previously served as the state’s lieutenant governor and a Buffalo-area congresswoman, secured victory over Republican Lee Zeldin to make her the first elected female governor of New York.
24. George Santos
The battle for New York’s 3rd Congressional District is a first in American history as both candidates, Santos and his opponent Democrat Robert Zimmerman, contested the first ever House election between two out gay candidates. Republican Santos, the son of Brazilian immigrants secured the seat to make him the first openly gay non-incumbent Republican and the first Brazilian-American elected to Congress.
