Massachusetts
18. Maura Healey
Serving as the Massachusetts Attorney General since January 2015, Healey had already made history in 2014 when defeated former State Senator Warren Tolman in the Democratic primary and then defeated Republican attorney John Miller to become the first openly lesbian woman and first openly LGBT person elected attorney general of a state in the United States.
She would take the next step in her groundbreaking life in politics by definitively winning an open-seat race for the governorship of Massachusetts against Republican Geoff Diehl, not only making her the commonwealth’s first elected female governor, but along with Tina Kotek, becoming one of the first two lesbian women to take office as governor of any state.
