Anna Politkovskaya, 2006
Anna was a Russian reporter who worked at Novaya Gazeta. In all of her books, “Putin’s Russia”, she accused the Kremlin leader of turning the country into a police state. She wrote a lot about all the abuse that occurred in Chechnya, and she even appeared a couple of times on various radio shows in Moscow.
She was shot at point-blank range while taking the elevator in her building. Five men were eventually convicted of her murder, but the judge discovered that it was a contract killing, and she even had $150,000 on her head. Putin was quick to deny any Kremlin involvement, stating that her “death was more damaging to the current authorities than her activities.
