The story of how Musk would end up owning Twitter started on March 25, 2022, when he began openly criticizing the very company he would end up acquiring with a tweet. He posted a poll to his 105 million followers asking them if they believe the company adheres to the principle of free speech.
Not long after this post on April 5, Musk discloses the fact that he had just purchased more than 9% of Twitter’s shares on the open market. Despite initially offering Mr. Musk a seat on the board, Twitter would quickly about face and attempt to block him, adopting a strategy known as a “poison pill” that’s often used to intercept hostile corporate bids.
