- The Republican Party only made bad decisions on climate change – In the 1990s, the Republican Party was going strong against climate change, with Senator John McCain introducing the first cap-and-trade bill into the US Senate. Also, former President George W. Bush, by the end of his mandate, started to increase awareness of climate change. And in 2008, the McCain and Palin duo were about to include a robust cap-and-trade plan, until Palin decided that she would rather be against President Obama’s cap-and-trade energy plan. And ever since then, the Republican Party never fully recovered in this matter, leaving room for a series of wildly bad decisions in matters of climate change.
- The international cooperation it requires is nearly impossible – So, just a quick recap: in the following years, China decided to focus on growth rather than cutting its emissions. At the same time, India is expected to develop, Indonesia will also continue to develop, so will Brazil, and Sub-Saharan Africa is also expected to see a growth surge. And this is one of the worst things about climate change: we have to choose between our most fundamental economic goal and an environmental imperative.
- Geoengineering is no easy game – If you remember Morpheus’s speech from “The Matrix”, where he was describing how humans were absolutely dependent on an energy source as big as the sun, then you can easily draw similarities with blasting sulfates into the atmosphere just to stop the consequences of global warming. And now let’s be honest, who gets to decide for everybody else how much sulfate is ok to blast into the atmosphere? What if Russia wakes up one day and declared that they actually liked the new climate? It’s just that at this point, it’s very hard to believe that we can still take action at the proper time.
