A crowded field
Even if Trump is the first Republican that announced to run for the 2024 elections, he’s definitely not the last one. As mentioned before, DeSantis has already initiated online advertisements which target various national audiences, which automatically leads to the conclusion that he’s deciding whether or not to candidate.
Former Vice President Mike Pence has also been traveling around the country to promote his new book amid speculation that he might jump into the 2024 race. In the meantime, other Republicans, such as the former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo have also hinted that they might candidates.
Even if Trump hopes that he will be the only Republican candidate, the 2024 Republican primary might get a bit crowded, just like in 2016, when over 12 candidates vied for the Republican Party presidential nod.
Republican hostility
It is very clear that the 2022 midterm elections left the party extremely divided over the future of the party and its strategies. There are even some Republicans who deeply consider various ways to move on from Trump and his conservative views, while others simply place the blame for that lackluster midterm performance on other party leaders, such as Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Ultimately, it all comes down to who gets the blame for the mediocre performance that has been registered over the past three election cycles. As many members of the party are still very loyal to Trump, there are still many lingering questions that target his influence over the GOP, and if Republicans will be able to appeal to more voters and win in 2024.
What Democrats do
On the other side, Democrats are facing their own dilemma. President Biden has announced that he plans to run for a second term, but it seems that many of his fellow colleagues don’t approve.
There’s also little agreement in the party over a better replacement for the current president. Some Republicans strongly believe that the GOP should be much younger, probably referring to DeSantis, who might represent a clear contrast to Biden.
