Growing up in Manhattan, New York City, Ivanka Trump would certainly have been by her father’s side learning the family business, and you might be forgiven for thinking that family business was real estate, and it surely is, but the other ‘family business’ in question is the business of deception.
Although the idiom goes, ‘like father like son’, a revelation from a recent deposition involving Ivanka certainly seems to prove that idiom applies to daughters as well.
The deposition is concerning an investigation into the questionable financial activity of longtime top Trump Organization executive Allen Weisselberg, who has served as the chief financial officer for decades and is currently under investigation for alleging misusing more than $1 million raised by the nonprofit by “grossly overpaying” for the use of event space at the Trump hotel in Washington for the 2017 inauguration.
When investigators from the District of Columbia Attorney General’s Office asked Ivanka “Who is Allen Weisselberg?” her answer wasn’t exactly an answer according to a transcript released earlier this year when she said, “He is the — I would have to see what his, his — I don’t know his exact title but he’s an executive at the company.”
To put that into perspective. Ivanka is somehow claiming to not know the position of a man who has not only worked side by side with her father since the 1970s but is the chief financial officer of a company she herself has been an executive vice president of since 2005.
Something both Donald Trump’s former personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and the ex-friend of former first lady Melania Trump, Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, were quick to call BS on Twitter.
This latest revelation just adds to the questions being asked not only about the financial dealings of the Trump Organization but who the Trump’s would be willing to throw under the proverbial bus to save their own skins.
With Ivanka essentially saying “Allen who?” it seems clear that even the highest ranking member of the Trump Organization that doesn’t bear the name Trump is being eyed as a sacrificial lamb or scapegoat, or both.
However, the likelihood of Trump loyalist Weisselberg flipping and spilling the beans is increasing as the December 2019 investigation into inaugural spending isn’t the only thorn in Weisselberg’s side.
New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) has been conducting a criminal investigation into Weisselberg’s personal taxes for months and she revealed on Tuesday that her office was also launching a criminal probe into the Trump Organization.
With Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr. also carrying out a parallel investigation into possible loan, bank, and insurance fraud by the Trump Organization and its officers, the pressure is increasing on Weisselberg to cooperate with the investigation into Trump’s company.
And as if that Sword of Damocles hanging over his head weren’t enough, Investigators are reportedly using evidence of irregular financial arrangements, such as “untaxed” benefits collected by Weisselberg and his son Barry to sharpen an already razor sharp sword.
But will Weisselberg turn and bite the hand that has fed him for so many years? Well, when the question “Would Allen Weisselberg flip on Trump?” was put to Jennifer Weisselberg, Barry’s ex-wife, she could not answer ‘yes’ quickly enough.
With the numerous criminal probes into the Trump Organization gathering more and more pace, many people are asking the question ‘Will Donald Trump be prosecuted?’ It looks like we may have the answer to that question soon.
