Colorado

10. Yadira Caraveo

The daughter of Mexican immigrant parents, Caraveo first became a member of the Colorado House of Representatives from the 31st district, a district covers parts of Adams and Weld counties, when she won her election back in 2018.

She would repeat the feat when she defeated Republican state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer in the race for state’s new 8th Congressional District, a seat located north of Denver, to become the first Latina elected to Congress from Colorado.

Connecticut

11. Stephanie Thomas

Thomas originally ran for the 143rd District in the Connecticut House of Representatives seat against incumbent Republican Gail Lavielle in 2018, and again in 2020, defeating Republican challenger Patricia Zuccaro. When she ran and won to succeed appointed Democratic incumbent Mark Kohler, she will be the first Black woman elected secretary of state of Connecticut.
