9. Karen Bass
Serving as the U.S. representative for California’s 37th congressional district since 2011, Bass, who currently represents a Los Angeles-area House seat, was once touted as being the running mate for Joe Biden in his 2020 presidential run.
Being a record breaker is not a new thing for Bass as she previously served in the California State Assembly, where in 2008 she became the first Black woman to serve as speaker of a state legislature. After defeating real estate developer Rick Caruso, she also became the first woman and the first Black woman elected mayor of Los Angeles.
