7. Rob Bonta
Born in the Philippines and immigrated with his family to the US as a child, Bonta served as a member of the California State Assembly for the 18th district from 2012 to 2021 before serving as the attorney general of California since 2021.
After Governor Gavin Newsom appointed him as Attorney General of California when former AG Xavier Becerra became Secretary of Health and Human Services under President Joe Biden, he would go on to win his midterms, making him the first Filipino-American to occupy the position of California Attorney General.
8. Robert Garcia
Immigrating from Lima, Peru, in the early 1980s at the age of 5, Garcia was already a record breaker when he became the city’s youngest and first elected openly LGBTQ mayor after being elected mayor of Long Beach, California, in 2014 and then again in 2018. He also has the distinction of being the first Latino American to hold the office.
To add to his list of accomplishments, his victory in the misterms will see him become the first out LGBTQ immigrant elected to Congress after he won California’s 42nd congressional district in the United States House of Representatives in 2022.
