Back in 2020, when the New York Times obtained decades of tax information on the former President, they revealed “chronic losses and years of tax avoidance,” a revelation that Mr. Trump labeled, as he always does with reporting that makes him look bad, as ‘fake news.’ What we did learn is that he paid just $750 (£580) in federal income tax both in 2016, the year he ran for the US presidency, and in his first year in the White House.
He paid absolutely zero taxes in 11 of 18 years of tax records examined by the newspaper while also managing to lower his taxes through reporting hefty losses on his businesses. While his TV show The Apprentice was a ratings smash he did pay $95 million over 18 years, but he somehow managed to obtain a federal tax refund to the tune of $72.9 million. A move that requires further scrutiny.
