Unfortunately, when it comes to the mindset of Putin, there might be a case for ‘desperate times call for desperate measures,’ as the confidence that he could easily overrun Ukraine in a matter of weeks has all but evaporated. The Internet would have you believe that Putin is dying of cancer and that he may have the mentality of a psychotic and murderous jilted lover. Seeing the world in terms of ‘if I can’t have her, no one can.’ But that remains unfounded speculation as best and ludicrous conspiracy theory at worst.
In response to Putin’s threats, the most likely one is that the U.S. and NATO will strengthen their ballistic missile shield in Poland and Romania in order to shoot down any rockets coming out of Russia. However, the unpredictability of Vladimir Putin and what his true long term goals are hangs like a sword of Damocles across the world.
