Well, all the independent member states that are part of NATO collectively agreed to defend each other, in case of a threat or a war. The Alliance was made in the aftermath of World War II after the Truman administration insisted upon creating it.
The Alliance managed to stay in place after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, and it has been involved in many military operations in the Balkans, the Middle East, South Asia, and Africa.
