As he was complaining about how he’s under criminal investigation after he took presidential documents to his Florida home and resort, Trump mentioned a false and debunked claim that targeted former President Barack Obama’s handling of presidential documents.
“Obama took a lot of things with him,” he added. But in reality, this is completely false, and the National Archives and Records Administration stands behind this fact after Trump made this false claim the very first time.
Even if he said that Obama took millions of records to Chicago, NARA thoroughly explained in a public statement that it had taken the records to a specific NARA-managed facility in Chicago, which is very close to Obama’s presidential library.
It also stated that, as per federal law, “former President Obama doesn’t have any control over where and how NARA decides to store the Presidential records of his Administration.” NARA went forward and properly debunked Trump’s additional (false) claims about other presidents that might have taken documents to their own homes. But it was still NARA that moved the documents.
